KRIKOR YEGHIAYAN (1833-1911)

Գրիգոր Եղիաեան ՀԲԸ Միութեան հիմնադիր վարչութեան ամենատարեցը

Krigor Yeghiayan (1833-1911) was the oldest member of the founding board of the Armenian General Benevolent Union. He has received his education in Cairo, in the school of St. Astvadsadsin, then at Hamilton's English College, and later on at the Ecole des Langues. He worked in Egypt as a lawyer where he has rendered vital services to the National Prelacy because of his legal skills and the highest level of relations he has developed with the Egyptian high ranking officials. The main field of his activity was diplomacy. He started work at the Russian Consulate as a translator and became a Deputy Consul in 1880. He was a well-known diplomat and awarded state orders of Russia, Italy, the Ottoman Empire, Persia, Egypt, and other countries. Through his authority, he significantly contributed to the successful work of AGBU, primarily through the consulates of various countries, in providing AGBU benefits to the people of Western Armenia. He was an attorney who also had several important archeological discoveries to his name. He bequeathed most of his inheritance to the National Prelacy of Cairo as some money was given for the construction of the Armenian Church in 1927, consecrated by St. Gregory the Illuminator. According to Vahan Kurkjian, "Yeghiayan's perceptions of charity were different from those of other members of the Board; where as an Egyptian, almost unfamiliar with the Armenian language and the Armenian press, he wanted the Armenian students in Egypt to use only his will" (1911 Kochnak "Egyptian-Armenian Testament" New York).
