RECEPTIPON IN HONOR THE 1979-1980 UNIVERSITY GRADUATES 1980 06 28 The AGBU-AYAUniversity Students’ Union , alongside its regular meetings and activities during the current academic year, also held a general members’ gathering on Saturday, June 28, 1980, starting at 5:00 p.m., at the Alec Manoogian Youth Center.--------- The purpose of the meeting was to honor this year’s graduating members, as well as to bring together the university students unions members under this Armenian-inspired roof and to engage with them in discussions on various matters.------------- In the presence of around one hundred university young men and women, the representative of the University Students’ executive committee, Mr. Viken Khatchadourian, delivered the opening remarks. After briefly addressing the valuable and nationally devoted potential of the university graduates, he noted that the AYA strives to prepare good citizens and leaders, and that in this respect, university graduates represent the fruit of its efforts.------------ He then read the list of graduates, numbering twenty-five individuals, three of whom were committee members.----------------- At the conclusion of the gathering, Mr. Nerses Kerkyasharian, member of the Beirut Central Executive of the AYA, was invited to the stage to deliver his speech.----------- In concise terms, he presented the history of the Union and its primary mission: “To bring together students attending foreign universities under the national and familiar spirit of the AGBU and AYA; to keep them away from assimilation; to acquaint them with Armenian culture and inspire them with Armenian values; to cultivate in them a healthy patriotism and conscious national awareness; to ensure, through them, the emergence of tomorrow’s devoted, honest, and selfless intellectual leadership, upon which depends the successful fulfillment of the sacred struggle for national preservation; to educate Armenian university students as exemplary citizens; to establish sound social relations; and to foster a spirit of cooperation among Armenian university students.”--------------- Mr. Kerkyasharian then, on behalf of the Beirut Central Executive Committee, congratulated this year’s university graduates, wishing them success in their endeavors, and also expressed appreciation for the committee’s efforts and its demonstrated commitment toward the graduates. 1980 06 28
