1978 AGBU Leb Regional Commmittee Yearly Report 2b ---(Excerpt from the AGBU Lebanon Regional Committee)--------- 1978 did not bring peace to Lebanon. Periodic clashes, and especially the fighting during the months of September and October, caused destruction surpassing that of previous years. Beirut’s heavily Armenian-populated neighborhoods became targets of intense shelling, and anti-Armenian provocations subjected our unfortunate compatriots to intolerable conditions.----------- Following the declaration of a bilateral ceasefire, thousands of displaced victims returned to their homes, and the Lebanese-Armenian community immediately engaged in reconstruction efforts. During this difficult period, as in previous years, AGBU provided direct support to the victims with its philanthropic and beneficial activities, from Beirut to Tripoli and Zahle. Beirut’s A. Manoukian Center, the Antelias and Tripoli clubs, Beirut’s pharmacy, and Zahle’s A. Manoukian Cultural House became shelters for hundreds of Armenian families.
