1979 07 01 The End of Year Graduation Event of the AGBU Yervant Demirdjian Dibar and Elementary, Tarouhy Hagopian and Hovagimian- Manougian Secondary Schools (Beirout City Sections) --------------- Mrs. H. Patapoutian, the principal of Demirjian School, said in her opening speech: "Today, we can joyfully declare that the Armenian school never retreated during the four years of the Lebanese war, as Armenian teachers realized the noble calling of building Armenian identity, and parents, prioritizing the education of their children above all, endured untold hardships... The harvest we present to you is composed of three bouquets."---------- The stage was then adorned with the sweet voices of the kindergarten children, who warmly welcomed everyone with songs and dances full of Armenian spirit.----------- Next, with the participation of Mr. and Mrs. Garo and Knar Haroutunian, 17 graduates received their first diplomas.------------- After a short break, it was the turn of the older students. Parents rose to welcome them, accompanied by the overture from Verdi's opera Aida.----------- Sixteen graduates from the elementary level stood on stage in a semicircle. Mr. Ara Topjian then ascended the stage to deliver his educational address to the audience.-------------- He then addressed the parents, noting that this year, especially in the destructive atmosphere of war, more emphasis was placed on character-building than education alone.--------------- The 39 graduates from the Scientific and Commercial Divisions of the Hovagimian-Manougian and Tarouhy Hagopian Schools, more mature from their arduous work, attentively listened to their beloved principal.-------------- From the graduates, Paul Sarkisian of the elementary school and Raffi Haroutunian of the secondary school delivered messages written by themselves.--------------- For the distribution of diplomas, the event's host, Mr. A. Madourian, invited to the stage:------------ •Chair of the Educational Committee, Dr. Mary Kasbarian,------------- •Principal of Tarouhy Hagopian School, Ms. Anjel Janjanian, •And Dr. Hratch Koumrouyan, a member of the Educational Committee.----------- Thus concluded another academic year, one that we perhaps doubted would end favorably, yet it did, though not without heartfelt effort.
